IE and Firefox question. Can someone please help?

I had IE as my default browser, and now I downloaded Firefox because it is supposed to be more secure. They say it is very easy for hackers to be able to get you through IE. Now that I have Firefox as my default browser, is IE still running? So therefore, can hackers still track me. Do I have to disable IE or something?

IE and Firefox question. Can someone please help?home theater

Dont worry, you dont have to disable IE6. IE6 is less secure that firefox because of the number of unpatched vulnerability. Thoses vulnerability could be exploited while browsing the net with IE6. So if you are using firefox to browse you can be affected by hacker stuff that would exploit an IE6 vulnerability.

I wouldnt even recommand to try to remove IE6 since its so tied with Windows ... you could end up having some trouble if you remove it. Just dont use it and you will be fine.

once you switch over to using ff as your default unless a program make a specific call for IE it will use firefox. You can uninstall IE from add/remove programs in windows programs section (please correct me if i am wrong here)

Is there any standard for encrypted email in the works?

Today, if you want email security, you have to use a number of different encryption schemes and implementations, none of which is standard.

Is there any kind of email standard coming down the pike that would standardize and secure email?

Here's how I imagine it would work. I go to my Yahoo Mail account and login. It opens a SSL connection and let's me type my email in and send it. When it's sent, it actually sends the destination email address to Yahoo first, who then sends a query to the other email host, let's say Hotmail. Hotmail sees that query for usera@hotmail.com and sends that public key back through Yahoo to my browser. That gets encrypted in my browser with that public key and then the encrypted email is actually sent.

When receiving, my private key when is my password for my email account, and then my browser will decrypt any email coming to me.

All this would be invisible to the users, all handled by the hosts.

You pretty much summd it up there from A to Z.

As far as any new email standards with an emphasis on security ( or in that realm) , I can honestly say I haven't heard of anything new at this time.

IE7 vs Firefox?

Which one would you go with? I would go with both but sometimes im just to lazy to start up a new browser and start off where i left off in firefox %26gt;.%26lt; Even tho firefox is more secure and most people use it, most websites ( I would say force) you to use IE7 or you get a weird prompt in Firefox or the website just dosnt work at all. And honestly i think IE7 is just a tad better then fireofx just for the convience of everything but firefox is well..better...in everything. sometimes i wonder if Micosoft would merge with (Dont knwo the developers of Firefox) and make something like Internet fox.. lol..Which would prob end up being the most Buggiest browser known to man. (sorry for all the errors i decided to rush type this)

Firefox it is built better by a more innovative group of thinkers. I have had no problems browseing and doing my online banking using Firefox. Plus it has heaps of add ons. Firefox also had tabbed browsing way b4 IE

Firefox doesn't contain ActiveX which IE has ( it lets all the crap onto your PC)

Firefox is amazing. If a website requires you to use IE7, download the IETAB extension (add on) from the Mozilla website.
I use both and find each has pluses and minuses.

I don't see a merger as it would likely bring the Justice Department down on Microsoft for anti-competitive practices.
no................. its like saying that ie7 is secure because of active and it installs stuff without your permision and firfox has none of that microsoft sucks
i'd go with firefox.

Don't have the time to explain every line. Sorry. But this sounds like a very good web hosting service, with every facility that you could possibly need.
Damn that will take awile shoot go to a local computer shop and ask them to exp[lain it to you it looks like an internet server and it looks like a nice one
Sorry I don't have time to explain each one line by line, but I'll tell you this: the hosting package you're looking at will probably handle whatever you're trying to build, unless it's something huge that you anticipate millions of visitors for. If you're just hosting one personal site, that package is overkill.

Why do people prefer Firefox over I.E and Opera.?

Okay here's the deal, I want to know why use Firefox when Both IE7 and Opera have been proven better. Tell me one thing Firefox has that Opera and/or IE7 don't.

Oh and you can't use anything thats been debunked by www.firefoxmyths.com

Off the bat this means no saying it's faster or more secure, or saying that it has less holes or it has add ons while the other two browsers don't. Those are just the most obvious ones I wanted to put out there the rest are on the site. Oh and don't bother saying it has skins that's the least important feature for a browser i'm talking about security and userfriendliness etc.

Why do people prefer Firefox over I.E and Opera.?amc theatre

Let's first go back to WHY FireFox. This is a Mozilla project.

It would be against the law for multiple companies to collaborate to make the same product. The whole idea is the develop a specification that everyone owns. Mozilla is that specification of how a Browser can work. So IE, Opera, Netscape, Sufari and countless other browsers were made to work following that mozilla standard. FireFox is the baseline development of that standard.

Oddly enough, there are many differences between browsers. These are the tiny mistakes that designers make when inventing their own. Of course, Internet Explorer added the ActiveX crap that makes it unique.

It was in 2002 when spyware and adware really started to get RAMPANT on the internet, rendering IE nearly useless. Many Windows Users discovered that FireFox did not have these problems, because ActiveX was the target of many of these problems. But eventually IE caught up, so the importance of FireFox has dwindled. But FireFox made life easier for many Windows oriented people, so they are loyal to the product.

Yes, http://www.FireFoxMyths.com tells the story well. But that does not mean that people would SWITCH.

During the late 90s, each version of internet explorer leaped over the previous version of Netscape. Each version of Netscape leaped over Internet Explorer. Opera gained ground during the IE vs Netscape wars. Even today, there are many Netscape fans.

Hey, many people still hate IE7. It will take some time to grow.

I use IE6 and Firefox at the same time. I still use Firefox to visit unknown websites. It's just a habit.

Good luck and Happy Computing.

Why do people prefer Firefox over I.E and Opera.?symphony opera theater

Well, one big advantage is that FireFox is open source. I don't know a whole lot about Opera, but I do know IE doesn't provide it's source code to everyone. That's a big advantage to developers especially. :)
I use Firefox because it has a lot of handy plugins, displays HTML properly(sites that can't be displayed by FF are coded badly =%26gt; not worth my time).

Also, my copy of IE (version 6) keeps closing quite a few times unexpectedly, which is more than annoying.

As for Opera... I don't like that it doesn't have the option of opening a new window instead of a new tab.

Regarding the fastness issue - to me they're all the same, really. Didn't notice any difference.

Not to mention that it can't interpret HTML properly (I'm a web designer/developer and while it takes me 10 minutes to code a layout for FF and Opera... when it comes to IE compatibility I need an extra hour to make sure it looks mostly the same).
It all depends on one's opinion. Most people find Firefox more user-friendly, more customizable and more robust than IE. Opera does beat Firefox in many respects, but it's not so well known yet and it is also closed-source, thereby not allowing any changes. I myself like Firefox and Opera, but I don't find ANY reason to be fond of IE.
I prefer Opera. It is more secure than Firefox as well as faster.

Also, you can make more adjustments with Opera than you can with IE and Firefox.

I tried Firefox and it was too much like IE.

So, not everyone perfers Firefox over IE and Opera.

Personally, Firefox sucks almost as bad as IE.
Well, it is simple, i use IE6 and Firefox. Neither makes my computer crash, now IE7 what a load of crap. If I go to more that one site at a time, lock up!!!

Never really got into Netscape or Opera. hope that answered your question.
Most of the myths on that web page are pretty ridiculous. First of all, it 'debunks' some random quotes about the market share of Firefox (which doesn't say ANYTHING about the quality of the program), and second: the page starts by saying:

====

Disclaimer - This page is in no way affiliated with Microsoft, Comcast or anyone else.

====

But to illustrate (for example) the Anti-phishing myth, it states:

=====

Myth - "Firefox 2's Phishing Protection is better than Internet Explorer 7"

Reality - "Internet Explorer 7's Phishing Filter finished at the top of 3Sharp's list as most accurate anti-phishing technology, catching nearly 9 out of 10 phishing sites while generating no warning or block errors on the 500 legitimate websites tested." - Source

====

The source it refers to is

====

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/09...

====

NOTE THE MSDN-PART!! That's a Microsoft site! Not only that, the first line of the second section of the 'proof' that IE7's anti-phishing filter is better reads:

====

To help us answer this question, we asked 3 Sharp LLC to conduct a study of the Phishing Filter in IE7 along with seven other products

===

A study that Microsoft paid for says that IE7 is better than Firefox. Big surprise!! It's very easy to claim a page isn't affiliated to any of those companies mentioned, but it'd be better if it only quoted from sites that aren't affiliated with any of those companies, EITHER.

But to answer your question... Why do I use Firefox?

Because

- it has tabs (IE6 doesn't), and because I like its menu structure better than that of IE7.

- Microsoft is too big a company, it needs competition. For years MS didn't work on IE6, but it shifted back into gear when Firefox was released.

The reason why I don't use Opera? Because at the time when I wanted to get something different than IE6, Opera only offered a free product with annoying ads. Firefox was free, and didn't have ads. Since then, I just never saw a reason to abandon Firefox.
Well i prefer firefox because of the extensions are many which satisfy my needs. Firefox is open source so you can write your own extensions.

Opera on the other hand has less extensions ie opera widgets. But opera is very good when compared on the security side.

IE is very very slow and dont prefer it at all.

Overall i accept that opera and firefox are both good for browsing but am never a fan of IE.
the question is illogical.

It IS some sort of malware that comes from those ****** Firefox fanboys and it must be removed. Do a full scan with both your anti-virus and your anti-spyware programs.

Or...Run both of these on-line scans. Both are free and excellent at detecting and removing malware free of charge. There is no need to un-install any of your current protections before using these.

1. Scan for virus, worms, dialers, etc. and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with BitDefender's Online Scanner. Press scan now on the left.

2. Scan for trojans, adware, cookies, and spyware and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with Ewido Online Scanner ( now known as AVG Anti-Spyware). This is NOT the same as AVG Anti-Virus. Press "Scan your computer now online and clean it for free!" on the left.

http://www.ewido.net/en/

These scans will take quite a bit of time. The time is necessary to clean-up an infected computer.

And remember...Firefox is crap.

It is very overrated, used mostly by brainwashed, pimply-faced, male adolescent fanboys, who are badly in need of female companionship, and aging hippies with gray ponytails. People of their ilk wouldn't have a clue how to properly secure any browser.

Firefox leaks memory like a sieve.

Besides, most people just want a browser to access the internet with, not a cult religion!

Need help deciding Computer Major?

^topic

I love being on the computer everyday, I know how to use many Microsoft Office programs as much as any ordinary college student, but since I'm a somewhat avid gamer, I've toyed around with different file formats, know how to use the Internet Browser well, know its functions alot more than the ordinary Computer user, etc. I've also had decent amount of experience with Flash (animation).

I took up on accounting so far during my second semester in College, but hate it and desperately want to move into a Computer related field. I need help deciding exactly which specific field would be good for someone like me... I don't know much about the actual interior computer parts, but I love being on the Internet Browser, so I was wondering..

Is web development a good career with decent/worthwhile pay? Is it a secure job? What exactly do you need to know/do?

Or is anyone else in a Computer related field and wouldn't mind explaining to me their work (range of pay within field)?thx

Need help deciding Computer Major?concert venue

I am primarily an enterprise web application developer and my job required a 4-year degree in computer science. I majored in software engineering myself. However, I am a coder. If you want to get more into the flashy web design stuff, i.e. giving a site "sizzle" and making it aesthetically pleasing (which I suck at), then you want to get into more of the graphic design and marketing end of things. Don't slack on coding skills though as you will still likely need at least HTML, CSS and javascript. If you still have questions, you should call your academic advisor (most schools assign one to each student) and ask him/her.

Good luck!

Need help deciding Computer Major?events opera theater

Web development is an excellent career, if you're interested in the work. You need to be familiar with HTML, CSS, Javascript, and at least one server language, whether it be PHP, ASP, ASP.NET, etc. as well as working with databases (mySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, etc.)

Having experience in several server languages is a definite plus, as is experience with other browser technologies such as Flash, java, Silverlight, AJAX, SOAP, etc.

The industry is changing rapidly, and technologies will come and go fast. You will need to be prepared to continue to learn new languages to keep up.

I hope this helps!
I don't want to persuade you away from a computing career, but being able to use Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer really doesn't mean anything when it comes to real computer related work. Degrees such as Computer Science or Software Engineering are very math intense and programming intense fields.

Web designers will learn a large number of programming languages (XHTML, JavaScript, Ruby/PHP, MySQL, ASPX, etc). Now, this doesn't mean you can't do it, but there were a lot of people in my freshman computer science classes who thought that computer science had to do with using computers, using Microsoft Word, etc. Comptuer science, instead, has to do with the understanding of how a computer works. How a computer represents data, how this data gets processed and displayed to the user, and how the computer interprets input by the user.

Topics you'd learn in a computer related major would be programming, system's design, database design, software life cycle, computer graphics (NOT photoshop!), etc.

People within my major are recieving job offers of around $50,000 and Computer Science is usually one of the top 5 degree in terms of average salary.

In order to do all that, you will need to have a server side programming language like ColdFusion, ASP, .NET, PHP, Java, ...etc. To get a security socket layer, you will need a security certificate. The prices vary depending on the security strength that you want. You can go to http://www.fiestadomains.com and click on SSL Certificates at the top of the page for more information. You would create a page using one of these languages to process the username and password. After verifying against a database, if the username and password are valid, you create a session cookie (using one of the programming languages mentioned above).

What good is it to redesign the Madeleine store when its completely insecure .....?

They claim:

"credit card numbers are encrypted using 128 bit encryption"

However if you go through the ordering process, at no point do they use SSL the secure encyption method to ensure your card details are not taken by hackers and the like.

You can tell because you don't get the telltale 'padlock' symbol showing on your browser, nor do they re-route you to a https address which they should do if you are using a secure page.

So basically all the details you fill out and send to them when you place your order are unencrypted and any hacker worth their salt can not only harvest your credit card details but because early on in the process they want your address so they know where to send the item to, they even know where you live.

So if you value you're security, I would advise you NOT to buy anything from the Madeleine store until they fix this massive security loophole.

oh and maybe they will change the Copyright 2006 at the bottom of the page too.

What good is it to redesign the Madeleine store when its completely insecure .....?tickets

I think someone mentioned before about why these items are for sale - presumably the cost of these items has been paid for out of the fund that people have donated to and then they a selling them so they have received the money twice for them presumably making a profit the second time.

They shouldn't be selling these items, they should be giving them out free - people have donated their money to help and they are charging to make people aware of their daughter.

They have turned her into a business, marketing her at every opportunity, it's disgusting.

You don't expect them to spend valuable money on designing a secure website do you? Anyone who buys anything from that site is an absolute mug so why bother?

I would rather throw my money down the drain, than buy off that site. Why feed the Mc's parasites. Nothing is going for Madeleine, it is for them.
Aye, as insecure as the way they left their kids.

Chunkz: Take a close look the next time you donate to people outside Tesco - you just might find the bold boy himself!! lol!
A store, how tacky is that, what next? Whatever happened to dignity in a situation such as this!
Did you also notice that you can only buy a Madeleine poster if you're buying something else.

They won't let you buy the posters alone - why not? It's a poster highlighting Madeleine's disappearance, surely they should be on sale without the catch.

That's unbelievable.

Actually, why are they selling them anyway and why do they have a store? They have over 锟?m dandies in the pot - and they're selling them. What for? The fund? These are things that they should be out distributing for free all over the place - not asking people to buy them.
I will keep my money, and they can do what they like.
they are selling replica cuddle-cats for 锟?5 each, and pick a photo of madeline, they have copies of all her outfits, if you want .....

yeah sick I know, but so is making a profit out of a missing child

EVEN MORE SICK WAS THE CHILD WAS LEFT ALONE!!!
If you give money, give it to something worthwhile like the nspcc, the McCanns have a million pounds +, what good has that money been in finding Madeleine?

Marketing Madeleine like this is shameful.

When you think, that they neglected her in the first place.
Yes, I was wondering how they can explain the copyright 2006 at the bottom, why hasn't anyone else picked up on this?

Can a hacker hijack a PC?

Alright, so, every laptop and desktop in our house is connected via a wireless connection, and my dad setup the connection and secured it by using the MAC filtering, changing the SSID, and all of the other steps needed to secure a network. Now, my question to you all is this: can a hacker hack into our network and hijack a PC, such as using the internet browser, playing media files, etc. I doubt they can, but I just want to make sure. Thanks in advance!

Can a hacker hijack a PC?concerts

Let me make myself clear. A wireless network can NEVER be made completely secure. Even the government cannot ensure that a hacker will not get into their networks. However, you can make it reasonably secure by doing what you are doing. Be sure to use either WEP or WPA encryption and hide the SSID and change it, and everything else. The fact is, someone could sit out in front of your house or nearby and hack in a matter of several hours. But do not worry. Make sure there are no cars or vans out front trying to hack in. This only happens in the movies though! The comforting fact is that the amount of security you are using will make it so a hacker will not bother to spend the time to hack yours when he can drive a little more and use the hundreds of thousands of unecrypted unrestricted wireless networks in the US. But you asked a hacker "can hack into your computer and the answer is YES absolutely. Ask any security or IT professional in the world and they will agree. But who is going to go through all the work to do that to defeat all the firewalls and encryption that you have set up. But do not doubt that it can be done. There are some very good articles about this on the internet. WEP and WPA encryption have many security flaws as well, but those are likely your only options and that's fine.

Can a hacker hijack a PC?headache opera theater

sure

easily
deffinatly, no problem.
They can. i have seen it happen, if so just turn your computers off or unplug the internet i dought it will happen tho, your network is very secure.
it shouldnt if you installed the encryption, you can check what computers has been logged on in the 192.168.2.1 somewhere there
Yes a hacker can. You need some type of firewall AND you need to secure evey computer connected on your network and always set up network passwords on every computer. Also get some good virus protection to make sure you don't catch any viruses from hackers.
Yes they can but if you take some good security pratice into place they won't wast there time on a small fry like you. no offence. They want easy remember that. If you have your anti-virus upto date a firewall and you have good wireless protection. Anti-spyware and don't do anything to stupid then you will be safe. If anyone tells you sure easy don't believe them they need you to download a trojan for you to get infected. I would not worry to much about it thou. They want bigger accounts and easy of use. If your not either of them then they are more then likely to go next door where it is easier.
Consider the trojans... If you let them in, maybe packaged as a innocent looking email....

Make sure you have AVG(free) or similar virus protection. And make sure you have Ad-Aware(free) and run that regularly.

Also having a personal firewall on each computer is a good idea, see ZoneAlarm(free). All these things will make it much harder to get hijacked, hacked, or infected. It won't make things perfect though.

Other things that I have found really helpful and actually work better then the originals is to use Mozilla Firefox(free) instead of Internet Explorer, and use Mozilla Thunderbird(free) instead of Outlook or Outlook Express. These programs are freely available, much less likely to get infected and also have many easy to use features that I find hard to live without now(like tabbed browsing). And make sure you do your windows security updates(unless you know specific ones you don't want(some software doesn't work under service pack 2 for example))

Nothing is perfect though, so keeping up-to-date and on top of things and you will be ahead of 90% of the people out there.
Of course. But make sure your computer's security strength is strong enough to protect your computer.
They pretty well have to be in front of your house to do that,...if you have all of your security in place there shouldn't be a problem, but if you have an unsecured connection any-old-joe can get into your folders and they can scam your line for their purposes. So, secure your connection with a complex passcode. This is from my 'Dummies tips:

"A big problem in most wireless implementations is that people don't use the features built into the products they buy. By some estimates, about half the wireless networks out there do not use encryption. To make matters worse, around half of them used the default network name as well. This is surprising when you consider all the press about the security (or lack thereof) of wireless networks. So ask yourself this: Do you really want people who drive past your home or office to be able to connect to your network?"

Here is a 'Dummies' site that can help you to connect safely and without a lot of hassle. It is plain ordinary English.
yea
Yes. As you know, everytime a software companies update their virus and firewalls, hackers are always finding new ways of breaking into the systems, which is why all software is constantly updated.

Now that said, you should probably consider subscribing to PC World or a good PC magazine. Here's an article that might help you. It is very long, but you will be more knowledgeable and be able to protect your computer better. Beware of the many sites you visit. Also, you can download malware, spyware programs to scan your computers.

Isn't Firefox a joke?

Lots of people compare this as a better option to IE, but they're wrong with their reasoning sometimes.

IE7 and Opera are way better than Firefox. Here's some of FF2's users reasons:

Firefox is much more secure - Wrong. ACTUALLY, IE7, Opera, and FF2 are all pretty secure. The only security for FF2 comes from having a low marketshare, and IE7 and Opera actually has built-in protection that works, without downloading.

FF is much more faster - Wrong. It's actually slower on many systems. It takes up system resources far more than IE7 and Opera, and the browser %26amp; pages take quite a bit longer to load up.

FF comes with less problems and bugs - Really? Then why do I see Y! users come up with FF problems? I thought it was so problem free? I guess it isn't.

FF is very extendable with many add-ons - so is IE7 and Opera. IE7 even has it's own add-on website: http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/catego...

So what do you FF guys have to say

Isn't Firefox a joke?playhouse

I agree with you.

I personally like IE7 and Firefox the best.

I've had problems with Firefox ever since I installed it. More so than IE or Opera.

I took the chance to redownload IE7 again, and you know what, it really is better now that I think about it. It works for me, like it did before, and there isn't a problem.

I just switched to Firefox because somebody told me to do it - Now I'm getting it off my computer.

Thanks for your assistance.

I suggest you also download IE7 Pro - it has extra feature not included in IE7, and bundles them along with it. AdBlocker, inline spell check, tab history, all that stuff.

It's free and nothing bad has happened to me with it : http://ie7pro.com/

I think we say, "Please don't feed the trolls".
I read something almost exactly like this... about a year or so ago.

The main debate isn't against IE7 and FireFox... The main debate of which is better started when IE6 was still being used. So ALL of your little tidbits of information are meaningless.

Firefox is far superior to IE6, but IE7 actually stands a chance against Firefox.

If you were around when it came out, you'd understand :)

Toodles
I still use IE6 but I don't care for IE7 at all. The phishing filter slows it down considerably when browsing. Not to mention I don't like the new arrangement of the toolbar buttons.

I use Firefox on occasion. There's certain times when IE doesn't cut it on a website, doesn't allow me to see certain things, and when I switch to Firefox there's no problem at all.

It's all a matter of preference really. Yeah the biggest reason Firefox is "more secure" is because IE is a bigger target for hackers. I don't think you can truely argue that one's better than the other.
The reason (I believe) firefox is somewhat popular, is because it is open source, which all the geeks and hackers love. Plus, they like "sticking" it to Microsoft. I'm not saying FF is inferior, because I absolutely love the browser, but then again, I love the open source software.
As an IT consultant; I'll say that no system is perfect. But FF, Opera and Safari's bugs, while they exist tend to be of the less "OH MY GOD! IF YOU DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS, OUR COMPUTER WILL EXPLODE" variety. Or at least they get less press (perhaps due to market share, which is ~15% for FF) so they seem less massive.

Personally, I think they all suck- I use Safari 3. Its pop-up blocker hasn't missed one pop-up ad that IE, FF, and others have always (even with their venerable blocker activated). Safari loads the fastest according to an independent testing agency with loading HTML.

When it comes down to it; IE was going downhill once it tried to strange the market- and software like FF, Opera, Safari and others have come back to challenge, though they are not pre-installed on any PC. Its call capitalism, and its groovy.

I am all for more browsers taking chunks out of IE, so that people who make the websites will do it right and not cheaply/poorly the first time (save me alot of fixing!)

What a joke. anything MICROSUX puts out aint worth a poop!!!

Just to answer one biggest up side of Firefox is browser based viruses and trojans are wrote via ActiveX controllers. Which Firefox does not use.

Add Ons

Add ons from MICROSUX are wrote and locked so IDIOTS cant screw up the coding. Firefox add ons I can edit to my needs.

Faster

how much crap you loading up in the tool bar? I use Firefox on all my machines and they kill IE. Again I am able to edit the browser settings and run it how I like.
When choosing a WB one must consider the content providers. All most all content providers support IE, many do not support FF. That in itself makes IE a better browser. All you FF advocate try watching Netflix online movies using FF!
I think you've already answered your own question. Not only did you waste five points by asking, you wasted your own time by typing out how you felt about it and then reporting back again and again to explain how you still didn't like it. Why does it even matter? Some people are going to love Firefox, and some are not. That's life. Big deal. Personally I enjoy Firefox. I don't have any specific reasons why, but I do happen to enjoy it. Internet explorer stops responding too often for me to work with, whereas Firefox does not.

But it still doesn't matter. You've got your own opinion about it already. You totally wasted a lot of time (just like I did).
You have never used Fx have you?

BTW it is Fx for Firefox not FF

Firefox keeps crashing. Any ideas?

I have the most recent version of Firefox downloaded on my computer and I use it as my primary browser because I keep hearing about how good it is and how much more secure it is than Internet Explorer. However, it keeps crashing on my computer at random intervals. It seems to happen at least once or twice per hour.

I couldn't find anything helpful on the Mozilla website. There must be some type of conflict between Firefox and another program on my system. Any suggestions?

How do I avoid getting the security warning when redirecting to a non-SSL address in ASP?

I have an issue with my login page, which is on SSL.

After I've validated the user login and password I redirect them to my normal domain (http) but I get the SSL alert that you are redirected to a non-secure page.

This doesn't happen on every computer so I guess it鈥檚 a browser security setting but I can鈥檛 ask a user to lower their security settings, really.

Why do you want them to go to a non-SSL page. I don't see the point personally.

In the systems I used to use - we would FORCE the user to SSL and each page wouldn't accept non-SSL traffic. Makes people feel safer about what they are doing.

Google and MSN don't do it.

When redirecting from SSL to non-SSL for the first time the user is asked whether they want to display these messages in the future, if they check the box, then it will display every time, otherwise not. The default option is not to display them in the future.

Even when the company is legitimate there is an opportunity for someone to steal social security numbers. This has happened with TJ Max and other companies. Millions of social security numbers have bee stolen.

I would suggest that you either complete the application without the social security number or ask your prospective employer why it is needed (it may be needed for a security check)

Internet problems - what is going on?!?ballet

Follow these steps and it will remove almost all viruses and malware/spyware from your computer. It will also make your computer run faster.

.

?I know this procedure looks long, but much of this is explanatory text to help less experienced people.

?Please do not cheat by skipping any steps. You are only hurting yourself if you do. And you will waste more time. The goal is to get your PC fixed. Completing the steps in this generic guide may or may not resolve all of your malware problems, but in all cases it gets your PC into a known state to help make it easier for me to fix your problems. After completing all steps, if you still need help, please send a new question. You may have a problem trying to run steps in safe mode on user accounts that have limited priviledges. This will only be on Windows 2K, XP, %26amp; 2003 systems. Limited user accounts will not show when you boot into safe mode. You have two options, run the steps in normal boot mode which may not work to remove malware, or you can temporarily change the user account to an admin account and then complete the steps.

?0: Preliminary House Cleaning %26amp; Setup

Unistall Malware thru your computers Add?Remove program.

You MUST be sure that MSconfig is not being used to control Startups. Note: That some Window's OSs (like Win 2K) do not have MSconfig!

?MSConfig Startup Mode

Please go to Start %26gt; Run %26gt; type msconfig and click OK!

Select the General tab and select Normal Startup.

Thenclick Apply and OK and reboot PC before continuing.

Remain in this Normal Startup mode while your PC is being cleaned of malware.

1: Secondary House Cleaning

This second step of house cleaning may save a load of time later .

?Empty any quarantine folders for antivirus and antispyware applications. Make sure you do this. Logs could be huge otherwise. If you are a Symantec/Norton user make sure you empty their Norton Nprotect folder guarding the Recycle Bin. Empty your Recycle Bin

?Download and install CCCleaner

?MAKE SURE you download and avoid getting the Yahoo Toolbar version. I do not want you to install any unnecessary baggage.

?Also it is recommeded to login to all other User Accounts on the PC including the Administrator account which will only show when you boot in safe mode. Run CCleaner on each account. This can greatly reduce scan time and log sizes from the later scanning you will do below.

2: Enable viewing of hidden files, system files and file extensions

Some programs hide themselves by making their files invisible in normal Windows settings. Not doing this would allow file extensions commonly used by trojans and spyware to be hidden, for example a file ending in .exe or dll making manually finding it, if needed, difficult to impossible.

3: Do not use Multiple Antivirus Applications or Software Firewalls

?Antivirus: If you have multiple antivirus applications installed on your PC, please choose the one you prefer and uninstall all others. Do this now before continuing because you will only be asked to do it later if not done now. This does not mean online scanners. It is only referring to full antivirus applications like McAfee, Symantec, AVG, Avast, AntiVir, Kaspersky, etc.

?Firewall: Only use one software firewall. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary and using more than one software firewall on the same connection could cause issues with connectivity to the Internet or other unexpected behavior including excessive use of system resources which will slow down overall PC performance.

4: Downloading Tools

Download the following tools and save in your favorite download folder or create one, for example C:\Spyware Tools or C:\Downloads. ( It is not a good idea to download them to any folder within C:\Documents and Settings.) And then install, update, and configure as indicated below. Do not run the scans until later when indicated. Also DO NOT confuse the word download with the actual installation of the program. You should install all programs to their recommended (by the install program). default installation folders. First you download the files and then you install (if the program requires installation) the program. It is also a bad idea to download and save anything you need into any kind of Temp folder. Malware hides in Temp folders and standard cleaning practices will delete everything from Temp folders.

Download GetRunKey.Zip and ShowNew.Zip from the below links and extract all files from both ZIP files into a folder of their own. You can extract both ZIP files into the same folder. Like C:\MGTools While these tools will run from your Desktop, i strongly recommend that you DO NOT extract them to your Desktop. Please install them where recommended. Do not run the scans yet!!!

SpyBot - Search %26amp; Destroy

?PLEASE leave all settings at default!!!! Install, do the search for updates now and get any updates, then fix the below problem with Spybot default products. If you get an error message about "bad checksum" when trying to update, just choose a different server location. Also look for the Immunize feature in Spybot and use it. Do not use the Teatimer function. It can be a resource hog and also makes removal of certain problems more difficult. Make sure you leave the SDhelper ( IE bad download blocker) checked to install (this is the default).

?Fixing SpyBot's Ignore Products Bug: Please run SpyBot and get into the Advanced mode by selecting Mode and then Advanced mode. Then select Settings and the in the left column select Ignore Products. In the right window pane make sure the All products tab is selected. Then in that window, right click your mouse and choose "Deselect all". Now exit Spybot. We will run a scan later.

Now if running Windows XP, 2K or NT do the below. If you have Windows 95, 98, or ME skip to Downloads for Older Windows OS below. CounterSpy and AVG Antispyware will no longer run on the older Windows's OS.

CounterSpy

?If you had previously used a CounterSpy trial, you may not be able to run it again. If this is the case, then run the below AVG Antispyware Removal procedure and attach the log later.

AVG Anti-Spyware

?Only run the AVG Anti-Spyware procedure if you could not run CounterSpy. You do not need to run both of these.

Note: If you are using an older Windows OS you may not be able to run some of the above tools! So if you are running Windows 95, 98, or ME run SUPERAntiSpyware and save a log from it so you can attach it. This step is not required if you are running Windows XP, 2K or NT) HOWEVER, no matter what OS you are running, if you could not run CounterSpy or AVG Antispyware then run SuperAntiSpyware.

5: Cleaning Malware

Important Note Before continuing with the below scans:

The best method to remove malware is to do it after booting in Safe Mode with no connection to the internet possible and no browsers running. Booting in safe mode is important because best results are achieved since safe mode disables most drivers and running programs. If you cannot boot in safe mode due to the malware problem then run the scans in normal boot mode but make sure you tell us later in any messages you post.

Thus you will need to print or save these instructons locally in a text file so you can refer to them while offline. Do this before continuing!

?Reboot into safe mode

?Physically unplug your cable to the internet (even if you have dial-up, unplug modem)

?Shut down ALL unrequired applications including browsers

?Run Ccleaner with the default options to clean out temporary files. Only use the Default Scan on the Windows Tab and select Run Cleaner. Do not run any other options from other tabs.

?Run Spybot Search %26amp; Destroy and allow it to fix all that it finds. Make sure you use the Immunize feature and use the SDHelper function but do not use Teatimer.

?For Windows XP, 2K and NT users

?Run CounterSpy - Make sure you have it Quarantine all detections! Also attach the log from CounterSpy later if you still have problems. To get the log after scanning. Click View -%26gt; Spyware Scan -%26gt; View Spyware Scan History. Next click on the scan you want to view, then click view full details of scan. Right-click anywhere in the window that just opened, click on Select All, right-click again select Copy. Now open notepad and right-click anywhere in notepad and select Paste. Now Save As CounterSpy.txt. If you could not run CounterSpy for any reason, run the steps in the following link for AVG Antispyware Running AVG Anti-Spyware and allow it to fix all that it finds. Save the log as requested and attach it later if you still have problems and have to post a message requesting support.

?For Windows 95, 98 and ME users

?you should now run SuperAntiSpyware

6A: Online Virus And Trojan Scanning

Please run the below two online scanning tools and make sure you save and attach the logs later to any request for help that you post. From step 5 you should already be in safe mode but you will need to reconnect your cable now and possibly reboot and choose Safe Mode with Networking Support. If you cannot connect in safe mode for any reason (like dial-up users), run the online scanners in normal boot mode. You will need to use Internet Explorer to run these online scans. Also MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST SUN JAVA Version installed by checking against the below link which normally has the most current version. This may help prevent some problems in trying to get these online scanners to run. Before installing the current version, you should uninstall all previous versions first!!!!

*** MAKE SURE YOU RUN BITDEFENDER BEFORE PANDA ACTIVE SCAN ***

*** But if Bitdefender cannot be run then run PandaActiveScan anyway ***

Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that i can easily view later while reviewing your log. All i have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

If you do not follow these step, you will have an incorrect log or worse a log summary which is useless to me.

Panda ActiveScan It will only fix certain viruses and trojans. Most items found will not be fixed. When it finishes the scan click on See Report . Then in the next window click Save Report. The default report name is Activescan.txt. Just save it where you can find it so you can attach to your message when you begin a thread with a request for help. If you have any problems trying to get a PandaActiveScan log,If you use Avast antivirus and it gives you and error like below when trying to use Panda, just disable Avast while your run the scan. The error is a false positive. See the below link for more info.

I installed java updates and now I cannot access any secured pages?

I was trying to access a page and it said that I needed to install Java on my browser. I went to sun.java.com and installed what it recommended for my browswer. Now, I cannot access ANY secured pages. I reset my internet settings to default to no avail. Now what?

I installed java updates and now I cannot access any secured pages?sheet music

The following instructions will work if you are using Windows XP.

- Go to Start-%26gt;Programs-%26gt;Accessories-%26gt;System Tools-%26gt;System Restore

- Select the option of restore my computer to another time.

- Select a date/time which was before you installed your Java updates

- Follow any other instructions.

- Your computer will reboot and your system should be at a point before the Java install and IE should work hopefully.

Please remember that this is advanced usage of Windows. Also if you have any files/data you created after the Java install, back them up before doing the system restore to a point in time before the Java install.

Hope this helps.

Hope someone can help me. I have at&t as provider I have not downloaded?

their browser I get to many errors. I have windows firewall on %26amp; have downloaded from AT%26amp;T their virus and spyware. I 'am going through internet exploer to use my yahoo. I'm just wondering how secure I'am with security when going under banking or anything else I do on internet. Yahoo runs much smoother this way with no script errors or slowing down computer.

Hope someone can help me. I have at%26amp;t as provider I have not downloaded?headache

I don't know anything about AT%26amp;T's browser but, Internet explorer is great as far as security goes, as long as you keep it up to date with the most recent version. I have used Firefox for the last 2 years with no problems at all and I like it 10x better than IE. Also unlike IE it has built in features that greatly improves security, such as anti-spyware, anti-virus, and pop-up blocker. It's free and you can d/l it at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Please, only if you're familiar with firewalls, VPN, and routers (preferably Belkin).?

I just got a Belkin wireless G to replace a Linksys that fried. I use Cisco VPN to get at my work's internal website. Over the weekend I changed to the Belkin router and at the same time a particular server I need to get to changed to https (secure).

I can't get onto the server anymore. I can SSH into it via PuTTY, but I can't put the browser (IE) on it (or Firefox). This wasn't an issue, I don't think, with the LinkSys, although the server wasn't https, so I can't say that for a fact.

That said, the router log is showing a DoS (Denial of Service) / RST block for the times I tried (and failed) to get to the server, so my guess is the router is blocking it.

The Belkin doesn't seem have a way to disable the firewall, although I did try to place my machine in a DMZ, but to no avail. There are some passthrough things I can use, but I tried putting the MAC address for the Cisco adapter in it, and it made no difference.

(Yes, I have to use IE for this particular application). Thnx.

Please, only if you're familiar with firewalls, VPN, and routers (preferably Belkin).?plays

If I understand you correctly you are telling me that you CAN get online but you CAN NOT use the browser for https (secure site). If you cant get online at all, then first power cycle the router, and cable modem, if necessary for a full two minutes.

I have owned a couple Belkin Wireless G routers, and I dont have that much good to say about them except they are cheap. I had nothing but trouble with mine also, until I dumped them. My Belkin worked on a 2.4ghz cycle, and yes, that is the same as a cordless phone so anytime anyone in my block got on a cordless phone, my internet went haywire. Solution: Take the Belkin back and stay with your Linksys.

Don't go there!

That link is probably taking you to a pishers site!

Anyway, uninstall and reinstall your browser.

If it still says that, then don't go there!

It's a pisher's fake copy site where he'll hack your information from and wipe you clean!

Dreamweaver 8 form validation works on preview, not on www! Can anyone help?

I am validating a form using the built-in Validator tool in the behaviors panel. When I preview in browser, everything works well - pop-up pops up when required fields aren't entered. However, when I upload my page to the www, the form isn't being validated. I am housing the page with the form on a secure page and upon submission, the user is redirected to another page. My problem is no validation!!! I am perplexed? Can anyone help!? Many Thanks.

I'm guessing the validator tool is a script. Have you uploaded the script to the server and checked the path ?

What's the point using Windows?

I mean, what's the point paying for that? Windows comes with nothing useful at all; Starting with the system itself, it requires many of those so called 'drivers' to get the whole hardware up and running, so it can't even just work out of the box. Once running, you need some sort of third-party anti-virus software (oh my) to feel a little more secure, since the system security is broken at its core. At this point you've got a pretty slow system already that looks pretty ugly. Then you must install Firefox manually, because it doesn't come pre-installed and the default browser just doesn't work. Same thing with OpenOffice.org. Then you have to install some decent image manipulation program, some decent CD/DVD burner, archiver, PDF reader, MP3 encoder, games, P2P networking, instant messenger... Everything! So I'm sorry if I missed some detail, but... What's the point using Windows at all? Why not just sticking to the latest free copy of Ubuntu or Fedora, just to name a couple?

What's the point using Windows?performing arts center

Why the rant? If you don't like Windows, no one is making you use it. Just because 90% of the world's computers run on Windows doesn't mean you have to like it.

What's the point using Windows?sunshine opera theater

By the looks of the detail of your question, it seems you think windows has basically nothing and that you have to install the things you want on it. That's the point. Computers are meant to be personalized, it doesn't matter which operation system you use.

Most people use windows because it supports most programs. If you get a mac or other operating system, you'll find yourself without a lot of good programs to use. Besides that, if you get nasty problems; you're stuck, almost no one can really help you.

*EDIT*

Not using it to not get problems is subjective, no matter how good a computer or operating system you have; you will always run into some sort of problem. Whether it's discontent, hardware problems, whatever; it's a problem. And you have to remember, with the most difficult problems comes the most sophisticated help.
She makes a couple of good points. You should run a different OS and browser..etc, if you like. I do for the most part. But most of the world runs windows. Non techs are not going to try to figure out how to install and run something like linux/unix. Use software packages that they are not used to. Find and install drivers.....all of the things that you don't mind doing when you are a geek. If weren't a geek, I would not like to have to edit a config file, play with a host file, etc.
Two reasons:

#1 It is mainstream. Microsoft did a hell of a job promoting and selling early Windows Systems, and people don't like major changes. They are familiar with the interface and want it kept that way, no matter how similar any Linux distro may be.

#2 Direct X of course! All the latest greatest video games are developed for the PC on Microsoft's Direct X API.

I understand Windows has its quarks. But so does every operating system. MACs have proven to be insecure. Not many people want to spend a lot of time figuring out how to set ip packet rules in Linux. I do not understand your stint on drivers. Linux is also driver-ridden.

I traced that IP, and i don't see that you are acctually compromised, unless you are not online at the particular time i traced you. What is your internet provider? DSL? Cable? or Dial-up? Need alot of more extra info if you wanna contact me to find out some more.

ok, just read the extra info, it is a SCAM. I can help you remove it, but could take alot of work.
Let me guess, at the end, they tell you to buy their software that can help you. From my experience with two teenage brothers, it's usually from porn sites. It's just an advertisement to try to scare you into buying software. I've seen those before on my computer. If you clear your history and temporary files, they should go away.

A great program to get rid of all of that is AdAware. You can just google it and download it. I love it.
you may have a virus or a Trojan horse also QUIT using Internet explorer go to Mozelle fire fox
That sounds like an ad that probably got downloaded from the internet. Use some kind of spyware removal until it deletes it.
run a virus scan ASAP..

or bring your comp to a best buy or circuit city to get rebooted!

make sure you have an up to date antivirus and spy sweeper!

I am getting the error:

The page cannot be displayed

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

--------------------------------------...

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).

Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.

On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.

Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.

Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.

If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.

Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error

Internet Explorer

I can log into my other yahoo mail adresses. However, one I get the "this page cannot be displayed error"home theatre

The first thing you should do in XP is to clear the DNS cache . In xp if you get a page cannot be displayed the first time you go to a site after you boot up , and it occurs again, XP decides you just want to see that nice page from now on whenever you try to visit the site( really polite of microsoft to make it help you out getting to the page cannot be displayed so easily).

Go to start/ run and type

cmd

hit enter

in the black box that opens type

ipconfig /flushdns

hit enter

(want to be really scared and see all the sites that XP has decided to keep track of for you to make it easier to go to ? Before you do the ipconfig /flushdns type

ipconfig /displaydns

hit enter and it will show all the sites it has decided to remember the URL and corresponding IP address)

If you are a SpyBotS%26amp;D user = In S%26amp;D check to make sure under tool/ie tweaks "Lock IE start page setting against user changes (current user)" is NOT checked.

You might also empty your temp internet files folder, and then go to: tools/ internet options/ general/ temp internet files/ settings/check for newest version of pages(either automatic or every time)/ok/ok.

.... And then tools/ io/ security/trusted sites/sites/add that url/ok/apply/ok, and then tools/ io/ security/trusted sites/custom level/low/ok/apply/ok , and then tools/ io/privacy/add that url/allow/ok/apply/ok

Also try tools/internet options/ clear files and cookies/ok/ok. If that doesn't fix it, try tools/internet options/advanced/scroll down to "security" and uncheck the first 3 boxes/apply/ok/ok , then

Click Start, click Run, type cmd and click OK, at the command prompt type the following commmand = ipconfig /flushdns and then hit the Enter key. Now restart the computer and see if the problem is resolved.

and then reboot your pc, then scan for spyware and/or trojan infestation.

Check PC date and time. Double click to open and make sure the time zone and daylight savings settings are also correct . Some sites block access when you have incorrect time settings.

Also, you might want to go to tools/internet options/settings - and move the slider for the amount of disk space to use for the temp internet files folder to the right some, then hit OK/OK. This might reqire a restart for the new setting to take effect, but at least it may be worth a try.
